THE YEAR OF THE EUCHARIST
From October 2004 to October 2005, throughout the Catholic world we are celebrating the Year of the Eucharist. In giving us this special year the Holy Father is hoping that a number of things will happen for all of us:
- That the year be a precious opportunity for all of us to grow in awareness of the extraordinary treasure Christ has entrusted to his Church
- That we strive to have a greater awareness of Christ’s real presence, both in the celebration of Mass and in the devotion to the Eucharist outside of Mass
The intention of the year is that it bring about a renewal in all Christian communities of the celebration of Sunday Mass, resulting in a more lively and fervent celebration of the Eucharist.
Together with this there is to be a rediscovering of the celebration of the Eucharist as the heart of the Sunday. Through all the various efforts and initiatives we are to discover a new enthusiasm for the Church’s mission (our mission as Church) and come to acknowledge even more fully the Eucharist as the source and summit of the Church’s entire life.
While there may be many and varied initiatives, many different things being done, what is hoped is that there will be an interior change in each of us as a result of all of these initiatives.
In order that we as a diocesan family respond more responsibly to the opportunity, grow in our awareness and respect for the Eucharist, improve our celebrations of the Eucharist and carry out our mission resulting from the Eucharist, I want to offer some reflections for our consideration.
