The Celebration of Confirmation

As parishes prepare for the celebration of the Sacrament of Confirmation, the following notes may be helpful.

The readings for the Mass are taken in whole or in part from the Mass of the day or from the texts for Confirmation in the Lectionary for Ritual Masses, nos. 764 – 768.

Note 37 in the Ordo presents a table of precedence to indicate when the ritual Mass is permitted and when the readings of the day may be changed. Sundays of the Easter season have liturgical precedence, so the readings for the day are used at Confirmation.

The Old Testament is not read in the Easter season. The Lectionary indicates the choice of readings with accompanying responsorial psalms that should be used for the first reading during the Easter season.

There is no restriction on children reading at Mass, so long as they are capable and properly prepared to proclaim the Word.

The Prayer of the Faithful should either be taken from the ritual or be modeled on that form. April 2014.
