Jubilee of Mercy

jubliee of mercyThe Bull of Indiction (Misericordiae Vultus, or “The Face of Mercy”) formally announcing a Holy Year was released by Pope Francis on April 11, 2015, in Rome.

In his announcement, Pope Francis said: “Dear Brothers and Sisters, I have often reflected upon how the Church can make its mission as a witness of mercy more apparent. It is a journey that begins with spiritual conversion. For this reason I have decided to proclaim an Extraordinary Jubilee which focuses on God’s mercy. It will be a Holy Year of Mercy. We wish to experience this inspired by the Word of the Lord: “Be merciful, just as your father is merciful” (cfr. Luke 6:36).

The Jubilee of Mercy will commence with the opening of the Holy Door in Saint Peter’s on the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception, 2015, and conclude on November 20, 2016, with the Solemnity of Christ the King. December 8, 2015, also marks the 50th anniversary of the closing of the Second Vatican Council.

The Archdiocese of Quebec has announced that the Holy Door of the Cathedral Basilica Notre-Dame de Québec will be open to pilgrims throughout the Jubilee of Mercy. There are seven Holy Doors in the world. Four are in Rome, in each of the papal basilicas; one in France at the Shrine of Saint John Vianney, the Curé of Ars; and one at the Shrine of Saint James in Compostela, Spain. The Holy Door in Quebec City, which first opened December 8, 2013, was a gift of the Holy See and is the only one outside Europe. All seven Holy Doors will be open throughout the Jubilee of Mercy.

Lent 2015

Message from the Holy Father

“Make your hearts firm (cf. Jas 5:8)”.

The Message of Pope Francis for Lent 2015 is “Make your hearts firm (James 5:8)”.  We need to renew our hearts individually to ensure “that all those places where the Church is present, especially our parishes and our communities, may become islands of mercy in the midst of the sea of indifference!” Three biblical texts are provided for reflection and internal renewal so that the faithful “will receive a heart which is firm and merciful, attentive and generous, a heart which is not closed, indifferent or prey to the globalization of indifference.” Click here to read the Holy Father’s message for Lent:  “Make your hearts firm!

Message from Bishop Jensen

Lenten Prayer and Penance for Life

The recent Supreme Court decision that struck down the law preventing doctors from helping their patients commit suicide is another dark chapter in the spread of the “culture of death”, to use St. John Paul’s vivid expression. The false argument claiming this as a compassionate way to treat the dying is the ultimate disrespect of people at the end of life. The dying need care, not killing.

We have an opportunity to build a culture of life by asking our political leaders to ensure appropriate palliative care for all who need it. To support this initiative, I invite everyone to use the coming season of Lent to implore God’s mercy on our nation and its civil leaders in this cause.

When the apostles felt powerless in the face of evil, Our Lord told them: “This kind cannot be driven out by anything but prayer and fasting” (Mk. 9:29). Let us use the means of prayer and fasting (as we are capable) to ask the Lord to deliver us from the evils that threaten life at its most vulnerable stages.

Lay Formation Alumni Weekend

Alumni gathered in Prince George June 13-15, 2014 to celebrate 20 years of Lay Formation in the Diocese of Prince George.

On the Friday evening Bishop Stephen Jensen gave the gathering his blessing and welcomed Bishop Emeritus Gerald Wiesner, OMI, who returned to the Diocese as keynote speaker. The retired bishop established the program in 1994 soon after he was ordained and installed as bishop and he taught several times during each two-year term.

Of the more than 300 people who participated in 17 Lay Formation programs at one of four locations – Domano Renewal Centre in Prince George, Sacred Heart Parish in Terrace, Banner Mountain Lodge in Smithers and Camp Emile on Moberly Lake near Chetwynd – 80 registered for the Alumni Reunion along with 10 of the facilitators who taught during the 20 years.

The reunion followed the basic format of a Lay Formation weekend with teaching sessions, spiritual development and prayer time and the celebration of the Liturgy of the Hours and the Eucharist. Stories were told, formally at the Friday evening session and informally around meals, refreshment breaks and socials that also gave participants opportunity to connect and reconnect around their shared experience.

Legion of Mary

Legion of MaryMembers of the Legion of Mary from the Archdiocese of Vancouver will be working with St. Mary’s Parish and Sacred Heart Cathedral  from June 30th to July 12th as door to door missionaries. They will invite people to learn more about the Catholic Faith or in the case of inactive Catholics, invite them back to a parish.

The Legion of Mary is a lay apostolic association of Catholics who, with the sanction of the Church and under the powerful leadership of Mary Immaculate, Mediatrix of All Graces, serve the Church and their neighbour on a voluntary basis in about 170 countries. The object of the Legion of Mary is the glory of God through the holiness of its members developed by prayer and active co-operation in Mary’s and the Church’s work.

The Legion sees as its priority the spiritual and social welfare of each individual. Members become instruments of the Holy Spirit through a balanced program of prayer and service. Members meet once a week for prayer, planning and discussion in a family setting.

Every legionary is required to carry out a weekly apostolic work in the spirit of faith and in union with Mary. Works include door-to-door evangelization, parishioner visitation, prison ministry, visitation of the sick or aged, crowd contact, religious education, visiting the newly baptized, Pilgrim Virgin Statue rotations, and meeting the other spiritual needs of the parish community. The Legion is, in essence, an extension of the heart and hands of the pastor.

If you would like further information on the Legion of Mary, please join them for a presentation at St. Mary’s Parish in Prince George, Wednesday, July 2nd at 7 pm or at Sacred Heart Cathedral, Thursday, July 3rd at 7 pm or visit their website at: http://www.legionofmarybc.ca/
